The National Institutes of Design (NIDs) are among India’s most prestigious design institutions, celebrated for their contributions to design education, research, and innovation. Established under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, the first NID was founded in Ahmedabad in 1961. Since then, additional campuses have been set up in cities such as Gandhinagar, Bengaluru, Kurukshetra, Vijayawada, Bhopal, and Jorhat. NIDs offer a range of programs including Bachelor of Design (B.Des), Master of Design (M.Des), and Ph.D. in Design across various specializations like industrial design, communication design, and textile design. Admission is based on the highly competitive Design Aptitude Test (DAT), held in two phases—Prelims and Mains. Known for their immersive and practical approach to learning, NIDs emphasize creativity, innovation, industry partnerships, and design-led problem-solving.
