A Career in Food Science and Technology: From Farm to Fork with Innovation

In today’s dynamic world, where health, sustainability, and innovation take centre stage, Food Science and Technology is emerging as a crucial and rapidly growing field. From developing healthier snack options to ensuring the safety and quality of what we eat, professionals in this domain are revolutionizing the way food is produced, processed, and consumed.
If you’re fascinated by science and ever wondered what really goes into the food on your plate, this could be the ideal career for you.

What is Food Science and Technology?

Food Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary field dedicated to studying the nature of food, the reasons behind its spoilage, and the science of processing it. It combines knowledge from chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, and engineering to develop safer, healthier, and more efficient ways to produce and preserve food. At its core, the field aims to understand how food behaves, how it deteriorates over time, and how it can be processed to maintain quality and safety.

Why Choose a Career in Food Science and Technology?

According to industry body PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), the market size of India's food processing sector is expected to more than double to Rs. 60,40,300 crore (US$ 700 billion) in 2030, up from Rs. 26,49,103 crore (US$ 307 billion) in 2023.

According to the Viksit Bharat@2047 report, the food processing business in India is projected to expand substantially, attaining a value of US$ 1,100 billion by FY35, US$ 1,500 billion by FY40, US$ 1,900 billion by FY45, and US$ 2,150 billion by FY47.

The food processing business contributes 32% to the food market and is one of the country's largest industries, accounting for 13% of total exports and 6% of industrial investment. The food processing industry in the recognized factory sector employs roughly 1.93 million people, whereas the unregistered sector employs approximately 5.1 million workers.

A career in Food Science and Technology presents a wide array of opportunities across research, management, and production. As the food industry continues to grow—driven by initiatives like “Make in India”—the need for skilled professionals is on the rise. This globally relevant field not only paves the way for international careers and higher studies but also plays a vital role in improving health, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainability. It’s a purpose-driven path with immense potential, including entrepreneurial ventures such as launching your own food products or brand.
